Worms are passive cave creatures that roam the Minecraft cavesystems. They won't harm the player and therefore create a great atmosphere in caves. Their animation is very smooth and they have some very special behaviour.
Worms can dig around in caves. They just "eat" stone, dirt and gravel blocks around them. This creates funny tunneling systems. However, if one is attempting to build a staircase or a noob-tube, they can be a nuisance if they come along and consume the blocks. This feature can be turned off in the config file.
Worms have several serious bugs. Often times, they will spawn in huge swarms, creating massive caves. The constant block updates can slow down the game, and will create "ghost blocks" which appear to be air, but cannot be walked through. The only way to fix these bugs is to leave the chunk.
The Worm can destroy water blocks.
